Bangkok Affections

Bangkok Affections

Author : Parmelee, James Aaron
ISBN : 978616-2450471
Category : Books on Asia
Pages : 281
Price: $6.99
Description
A teacher fighting demons. . . Is there life after death? An American English teacher in Bangkok is intrigued by his school's Virgin Mary statues weeping tears of real blood seemingly over the abuse and trafficking of children. With diligence, perseverance and a bit of good luck, he achieves personal fame by stopping clerical pedophiles in their tracks around the world except for a couple of vicious demons he overlooked in his own school. . .
A wonderful, if truly frightening, novel about heinous crimes taking place in Bangkok. James Parmelee not only knows and understands the world of being a foreigner teaching in Thailand, but also has an incredibly gifted writing style that gets you turning the pages in a hurry to see what happens next.
***
“Now, don’t interrupt me, Jack!” the general warned. “There’s a lot more information I have to tell you during this reverse interrogation. You see, your cell would be only twelve meters by five meters in dimension, and for sleeping would be shared by about sixty other men, all snoring and breaking wind, and so on. That kind of space would not allow you, even if you were only my size, to as much as stretch your legs at night without kicking someone, which is not a very wise thing to do in prison, Jack! But, given your size, well, you can imagine your greater difficulty in just trying to get some sleep.
“Then early in the morning our guards would take you after a thorough body search to a long trough of putrid water, where along with hundreds of other prisoners you could have a bath if you had something to dip the water out with, provided there was still enough left by the time you reached the trough.
“For your breakfast, there would be only the very worst Thai food imaginable, which generally turns the stomachs of foreigners, some of them complaining that even the cats who eat it vomit, though I’m not sure if that’s true or not. Of course, prisoners who have money can buy proper food to eat there, which is okay for them.
“However, in your case, you would not have any money at all, would you?” The general leered.
“Of course, to keep you busy during the day, they might have you doing something useful like making paper bags, for instance, and doing that would earn you a monthly salary of about three dollars U.S. How would you feel about all this Jack?”
Jack trembled. “Disgusted, of course,” he responded.
“And I don’t blame you! So now let’s get back to the second scenario, where we let you keep all of your money, and give you an extra ten million baht besides. Of course, you would need to exit Thailand forever, and probably take up a new identity somewhere else. Could you accept that?”
“I would have no choice,” admitted Jack, but with little enthusiasm.
“And what would you do for us to earn that splendid privilege, Jack?”
***
“You want to use me for a sting, don’t you?”
“Ah, Jack!” shouted the general in delight. “I knew that you were a man of superior intelligence all along!”

Description
The way in which we understand and appreciate the world will affect our whole approach to life. Over the last century physical science has shown that the cosmos is quite different from what was previously thought. It is far more stimulating and complex. This book describes how, over the centuries, certain simple observations have affected physical science and mathematics. We are now beginning to unearth mysteries and answers which previously were believed to be beyond solution. But science cannot provide all the answers. After first visiting and then living in Southeast Asia I found a range of different approaches which have proved invaluable when facing the challenges of life. ‘A Chilli Too Far’ was written after completing a cycling tour of Southeast Asia in 2002/3. The region, formerly called ‘Indochina’, contains a wonderful tapestry of cultures - a result of Indian, Muslim and Chinese influences. Such outlooks complement the Western perspective. Although my initial intention was to have some fun, the tour turned out to have unexpected repercussions. I was to discover a variety of positive outlooks when tackling life’s problems and met people from differing cultures who radiated an inner sense of contentment. This book, although basing itself on the way in which physical science has developed over the centuries, attempts to show that a harmony is possible between the Oriental and Western perspectives. This seems to be particularly relevant in an age of ideological tensions.

Singapore Girl: A true story of sex, drugs, and love on the wild side in 1970s Bugis Street

This is the true story of a long-vanished Singapore and the dangerous carnival known as Bugis Street. After four years of romping around West Africa and the Brazilian Amazon, James Eckardt cut a raffish figure as he stepped off a sailboat at Clifford Pier in Singapore on March 30, 1975, en route from Manila to Jakarta. Little did he know that he would become enchanted by a fun-loving Singaporean nymph named Milly who would take him in hand to explore the exotic wonders of her city. The fun would turn into hopeless love, one Eckardt would desperately chronicle in a 36-hour, drug-laced writing spree and entitle "Singapore Girl". The yellowing carbon copy would sit in an envelope for thirty years as the author went on to become Thailand's most famous expat writer. And then in 2004, an email arrived that would lead Eckardt to discover what had happened to the Singapore girl, who, at the time he had loved her, had not technically been female.

Diamond Fellowship Extract - Hospital Visit

Meanwhile at the hospital whilst the guys chatted with Art, and some of the other patients, dj sought out the doctor in charge, who told him that the nurse had already updated him and how grateful they were.
dj asked about Art and the doctor said he knew what he was asking and he didn’t know.  He was a battler, where others gave up.  He was also there much earlier than most.
“And since Dao and Jaew shot the report, he has been more determined than ever.  I had to force him to use a wheelchair last night.  He doesn’t need it.  It’s just that the last thing we needed was him being overcome with emotion and falling over, the lesser of two evils.  It was his decision not to tell you until last night; it was something to look forward to.  I can’t say how long.  If he hadn’t been in such a bad state when one of the nurses found him, we’d never have taken him in.  Now he is helping us out a lot with the others.  He is the local hero after last night.”
dj thought.  “If we plan to do a show in 2 weeks, would that be something for them all to look forward to.”  The doctor nodded.
dj said he’d call with a date the next day and asked what else they needed.
“You name it, we need it, as we say in the programme.  For a start old magazines, snacks, music.  Boredom is a major problem.  We have 20 patients.  It’s as many as we can afford, and even then it’s difficult.”
He took dj for a walk and showed him their fundraising target.  “If we achieve that, we can convert these two rooms into 10 cubicles each and give them some privacy and their own TV.  It will also help control infections.  Beyond that, we’d like to expand but that needs big money as we’d need to have enough in the bank to cover running costs for at least a year.”
They got back to the ward to see a smiling Art, sitting next to his bed whilst the others chatted with the other patients.  Art got up and walked over.  dj asked if he’d upset the others already.
“No, I told them to go and introduce themselves.  I’m happy, and I have much more time.  None of us have anywhere else to go.  Most of them won’t be here much longer.”
He explained that he was HIV+, and that the doctor said he couldn’t tell when it would develop to AIDS.  The hospital had agreed to take him after one of the nurses found him sleeping rough in a doorway.  He helped out with the others.  Sometimes he felt guilty for taking a place that someone else needed, but he had nowhere else to stay.
dj told him that they would bring the show in about two weeks and he’d call him with the date the next day.
“I don’t have a phone.  I had to sell everything I could for food before I had a place at the hospital.”
“I know.  Here is a phone and we have already put everyone’s number in and there is 500 Baht of credit.  “We’ll put 100 Baht a week on for you.  Now we’ve found you, you aren’t getting rid of us!  Once a diamond, always a diamond so here are some shorts and a shirt.”  He handed him the clothes and said Rit was sure 23 was his number.  Art smiled and hugged him.
“Oh and it’s my birthday next week.  The doc says you can come and visit for 24 hours.  We won’t be working, just a party at the houses.”
Art looked at the doc who said he couldn’t foresee any problems.  He’d give them the medication and find someone to give him his injections.
When the others returned, Art told them, and thanked them.  Run said he wouldn’t be there for dj’s birthday, but he was down second Tuesday of every month and would come and visit.
They said their goodbyes, and headed off in silence.
